The flattering title of the Close-up Photographer of the Year was awarded to Galice Hoarau, a French professor in marine molecular ecology. He was also the winner of the Animals category of the contest with his image of an eel larva that he spotted during a blackwater dive in Indonesia. As for the Young Close-up Photographer of the Year, the title was awarded to 16-year-old Tamás Koncz-Bisztricz from Hungary.
