The announcement that many people have been waiting for, ever since the L Mount Alliance was first made official back at Photokina 2018, may finally be upon us. Sigma noted at the time of the initial alliance announcement that a full-frame Foveon sensor camera was on the way, but it was expected in 2019. But instead, they released the Sigma fp, and pushed the Foveon camera back to 2020. Now, though, Sigma Imaging UK has posted up a “Sigma News from CP Plus 2020“ event on their Facebook page, which suggests that a big announcement is on the way. Sure, we might hear about some lenses, but it also suggests that the full-frame Foveon L mount camera may be on its way before the end of the month.
While the event’s description doesn’t explicitly say that they are announcing a new camera, it’s the ideal time for them to do so. With CES already over and Photokina on life support, there aren’t really many other huge shows for them to present it at. NAB in April wouldn’t make sense, as Foveon tends not to do well for video. It attracts a global attendance and the Sigma Corporation is pleased to support this important event and will be exhibiting. Sigma Imaging (UK) Ltd. will be monitoring the reports from the event and will be sharing the latest information on our Facebook page. Dates and times: Thursday, 27th February to Sunday, 1st March 2020February 27 (Thu) 12:00–18:00 (Press Time traditionally held : 10:00–12:00 TBC)February 28 (Fri), 29 (Sat) 10:00–18:00March 01 (Sun) 10:00–17:00
Also, there appears to be a big gap in between the Sigma fp and the Sigma sd Quattro H in the event header photo, suggesting that their announcement might be about to fill it. There do seem to be a lot of announcements expected for CP+ this year. But this is one I’m really looking forward to. Update: Nope, never mind. Not happening just yet. Full-frame Foveon is on hold for now. [via Photo Rumors]
