Fragment 8 Retro Camera brings together the Super 8’s look and feel with modern-day technology and social media. This strange little gadget is inspired by Super 8 cameras but lets you directly shoot GIF and share it on your social media immediately.

Fragment 8 makers wanted to keep it simple. It has a fixed-focus lens and a built-in viewfinder. There are no manual controls so you don’t have to fiddle around with aperture, IOS, or white balance settings. It shoots 720p resolution at 9 or 24 fps. It supports mp4 format, but as I mentioned, you can also directly shoot GIF.

You can use the “basic version” of the Fragment 8, or add a rotating plate and three filter lenses: Kaleidoscope Six lens, the Star Filter lens, and the Radial Filter lens. This is the look you’re gonna get with them:

Fragment 8 tries to reconstruct the look of the Super 8 camera, but also the look of films shot on it. The camera produces that characteristic Super 8 shutter sound, and the clips and GIFs have a vintage feel to them. Of course, you can also share your shots on social media. After all, GIFs probably don’t have many different purposes than that. Here are the specs and a few sample videos:

Fragment 8 is currently being funded through Kickstarter. You can get the pilot version of the basic kit (the camera, the basic lens and the gift packaging) for $78. The early bird price for this kit is $91. If you want to add the lens rotating plate and the three filter lenses to your kit, then you’ll need to back up the project with $128. [via DPReview]
